The Regulation of English Learning Portfolio Project for Undergraduate Students

  1. In order to enforce the English proficiency of the undergraduate students and the Graduation Requirement of English, the English Learning Portfolio Project is accordingly added in the Regulation of Undergraduate Student English Proficiency Cultivation under the English Proficiency Standard for Undergraduate students. Students can apply to join in the English Learning Portfolio Project and collect the required points to meet the English Proficiency Standard.
  2. English Teaching Center (ETC) has the duty to plan and implement the English Learning Portfolio Project (ELPP). The date for application is (1) from 1st to 30th of every September and (2) from 1st to 30th of every March.
  3. Applicants: The undergraduate students, exclusive of the students of English major, in service, in continuation program, of exchange student programs, from non-English speaking countries, and of overseas Taiwanese.
  4. Those who intend to apply for the ELPP must provide (1) a filled-out application form, (2) student ID card, and (3) a photocopy of student ID card (photocopy should be pasted on the application form).
  5. After the application is approved by the ETC, students can participate in the English learning related activities in the following categories to earn points. The maximum points a student can earn from the following categories is 80.
  1. Students can consult with the English tutors in English Plaza. Consultation service includes:
  1. English oral consultation with a foreign contract teacher or an English tutor. 8 points can be earned for each consultation.
  2. English discussion with a foreign contract teacher or an English tutor. 8 points can be earned for each discussion.
  3. Online English writing consultation. 8 points can be earned for each consultation.
  1. Students can complete the following tasks.
  1. One completion of designated writing task with correction from a contract teacher or English tutor (native or foreign). 8 points can be earned for each task.
  2. One completion of designated speaking task with approval from a contract teacher or English tutor (native or foreign). 8 points can be earned for each task.
  3. One completion of reading a designated book of student’s learning level in the English Plaza and of answering the worksheet provided by the ETC. 15 points can be earned for each reading.
  1. Students can take online self-learning courses opened by Live ABC and Live CNN. After finishing a course, a designated test corresponding to the the course content should be taken by the student and the the student should pass the test. 8 points can be earned for each test.
  2. Students can take intramural or inter-school English-related courses, inclusive of the elective inter-college courses opened by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, elective General English courses, and any courses delivered in English. 40 points can be earned if a student pass any aforementioned course. However, the required General English courses cannot be counted for this rule.
  3. Students can participate in intramural English-related contests or competitions. One certificate of attendance can be counted for 40 points. If awarded by the host organizer, the student can earn extra 60 points.
  4. Students can take part in the Student Ambassador Project or Buddy Program organized by the Office of International Affairs and students can earn points by the official certificate given by the office. If the duration of one program is one semester, 40 points can be earned; if the duration of one program is one year, 80 points can be earned.
  5. Students can join in overseas programs of intensive English training, international volunteer, working study, or any related exchange learning in English Speaking countries. After a student returns, the student should submit the photocopy of passport and 3 English learning reports. Each report should contain at least 150 words. If the duration of any program of the aforementioned is as long as 2 weeks or longer, 80 points can be earned. If the duration of a program lasts less than 2 weeks, 40 points can be earned.
  6. Students can join in overseas programs of intensive English training, international volunteer, working study, or any related exchange learning with English as the main communication in non-English-speaking countries. After a student returns, the student should submit the photocopy of passport and 3 English learning reports, and each report should contain at least 150 words. If the duration of any program of the aforementioned is as long as 2 weeks or longer, 80 points can be earned. If the duration of a program lasts less than 2 weeks, 40 points can be earned.
  7. Students can register external English proficiency tests recognized by this university. 20 points can be earned when the transcript of any test is submitted to and verified by the ETC. If the score of TOEIC reaches 550 or exceeds it, extra 20 points can be earned. This item can only be adopted once.
  8. Students can participate in the lectures, speeches, or related activities. 8 points can be earned for one participation.
  1. Students who join in the ELPP have to collect 100 points before graduation, which is equivalent to the fulfillment of English Proficiency Standard. Any participants in this project must submit the learning passports and related certificates or documents to English Plaza to verify the points in the last 3 weeks before the end of every semester. Points collected during winter vacation should be counted for the following spring semester. Student can collect points in summer vacation, and these points will be counted for the following fall semester. Points collected during semester cannot be adopted if students fail to submit to English plaza for verification at the end of current semester.
