l   Objectives

The goal of the contest, held from 2013, titled as “The United States of America, as Viewed from Taiwan”, is to cultivate students’ English expression and organization skills, and to provide them with an exchange and observation platform. Students participating in the contest can explore different aspects of the United States in English as well as their impacts on Taiwan from the viewpoint of Taiwan. Since the English speech contest in the past two years received a lot of registration and favorable comments, the English speech contest this year is expected to attract more students to sign up for the contest. Students may develop their global perspective, practice to hold great composure on stage, and improve the speech skills through this speech contest.

2   Procedure

Titled as “The United States of America, as Viewed from Taiwan”, the contest will be run in two groups: college (team English PowerPoint presentation) and high school (individual English speech). The panel judges for each group will include three local/foreign experts, scholars and the American Institutes in Taiwan (AIT) officials. They will judge the contestants on their content of presentation/speech, English language fluency, and deportment. The winners will receive awards and prizes. To encourage students’ participation and show the organizers’ appreciation to the contestants’ instructors, all the finalists will receive certificates of participation and a letter of appreciation will be presented to instructors.  

In the preliminary phase, a three-minute video (High school group - English speech; College group - English PowerPoint presentation) should be sent to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature combined with Center of English Teaching in National Sun Yat-sen University via post by the indicated deadline (10/08). The contestants can decide the title of their speech/presentation, of which the content should be connected to the theme of this contest.
